Out of The Box Festival

Picture

'Welcome to The Turning Tides Project virtual festival, 'Out of The Box'.

We've got an exciting day ahead with lots of fun activities running for you to join in with live or in your own time.

Follow the story of our Dragons, Tarragon, Ostinato and Puck, as they journey to find the sleeping dragon Quartz who is rumoured to be hiding at a secret location in Crediton.

Follow the dragons footprints below as the trail leads us through the day's timetable...

10.00 am - Aerobics

Tarragon has been self isolating in the Tea Rooms and now wants to emerge.

They wonder about how their cousin Ostinato, currently living Puglia, Italy, has found the lockdown.

Tarragon gives Ostinato a call:

“Hello Ostinato - how are you?” Tarragon asks.

“I’m very bored of these four walls but I’m scared to leave. It’s time to dance, now, please.” Ostinato replies.

Tarragon decides they want to go and help, but they need to warm up before the long flight.

“I will come and help you, cousin. But, first, I must warm up before my long flight.”

10.45 am - Gardening

After warming up, Tarragon makes the flight to Italy and greets Ostinato.

"Hello, cousin. It's good to see you"

Ostinato paces around the house repeating “It’s time to dance, now, please. But I’m scared to leave the house. It’s time to dance, now, please.”

To tempt Ostinato out of their house, Tarragon tells them the myth of a sleeping dragon in Devon who is due to wake up in the Autumn of 2020.

The myth is that to find the dragon, you must:
- Pay it forward (do a good deed)
- Make a new friend - Release a spirit
- Repeat a special phrase
- Do a thing that scares you

“Would you help me to find the new dragon, cousin?” Tarragon asks.

Ostinato agrees and they make their way to England.

When they arrive, they are hungry and decide they must make food! They search for ingredients in the garden to make an Italian dish.

"I love pizza - it’s my favourite dish” Ostinato states.

Vegan dragon, Tarragon, screws their face up in disgust.

"Eurgh. Vegan cheese is horrible! I will not eat a pizza. Let’s have a look in the garden and see what we can find”

11.30 am - Cooking

Tarragon and Ostinato enjoy the cooking.

In the kitchen, they discover a rolling pin with “Property of Judy” written on it.

“This must be from an old Punch and Judy puppet show.

Perhaps this is the first task - we should return it to Judy and do a good deed. Perhaps someone will pay it forward” Tarragon decides.

They find Punch and Judy’s stage, but no-one is around. Punch and Judy must be on holiday.

“Judy is not here. We’ll leave the rolling pin in her house for when she gets back.”

The dragons leave the pin on Judy’s doorstep and notice some activity next door.

“I wonder who lives here?” Ostinato asks. “Let’s go and see.”

12.15 pm - Craft

Puck emerges from the house next door and the dragons realise this is the second part of the myth: Make a new friend.

“I am a story telling dragon” announces Puck.

“Well, we have a story for you!” reply the other Tarragon and Ostinato.

They tell Puck the myth of the sleeping dragon and they ask him for help.

“This is beyond my powers, but if you follow me to the storytelling wizard, he might be able to help.”

The dragons head off to find the storytelling wizard.

2 pm - Story Telling

The spirit of storytelling has been released!

The dragons have complete the third part of the myth.

Ostinato, true to their name, continues to repeat the phrase, “Time to dance, now, please.”

“It is true. It has been such a long time since I’ve been tap-dancing,” added Tarragon.

“Let’s go and find some new music to dance to!” cried Puck, excitedly. “Wait… what are those beautiful sounds in the distance?”

Out Of The Books

Stories are important. They entertain us, they transport us, and they help us make sense of the world.

We want to make stories that are inclusive and accessible to all.

We want everyone to feel like they can express themselves and tell their stories.

We want people to be able to read each others stories and gain a new perspective.

We are making a collection of virtual books, made up of submissions from people in: Devon, England, the UK, Europe and all around the world!

Performance notes

Hi I’m Jane, Director of the Turning Tides Project. We wanted to say a few things about ‘A Journey Through Lockdown’, the films that accompany it, and also the ‘Song A Day’ montage.

At the end of March, when lockdown became a reality, we all began a journey. As an organisation, we use original music, often to give us a voice and explore how we are feeling about things. So inevitably, we were going to do that as part of the lockdown journey. What we’ve ended up with, I think, is a really interesting chronicle of events and feelings, and when I watch it, it makes my hair stand up on end.

At the beginning, we were all anxious and unsure. Initially, perhaps, we enjoyed the quiet. There were moments when we were lonely. Moments when we wondered what was going to happen next. A journey back towards first people seeing other gently, and then in small groups.

I think that the music and the films capture that in a really powerful way. I hope you do too. But, more than that. The journey itself. There’s been lots written about the struggles for musicians, of playing virtually. The lag that includes. It’s changed the way that we create music. The music we’ve created couldn’t have been created at another time, and I think that’s really powerful. We’ve learnt some things. We’ve learnt some things about how we engage each other virtually, and some of those things we will keep into the future. So, at the end of the musical journey, what you’ll hear is a piece that possibly reflects the beginning of the piece, but with changes, and that’s where we’ve arrived.

We’ve learnt a lot of things. We’ve explored a lot of things. We’ve experience something that none of us ever imagined we would, and we’ve arrived at another place. We’re all the same people, we’ve learnt some things. We’ve changed. Let’s use the things we’ve learnt to make a positive difference. Let’s be the change.

Thank you.

Finding The Pieces

4.30 pm - Make Up!

After their musical journey through many styles and dances, the dragons reflect on what they have seen.

“Those repeated ostinatos were something else! They made me feels so free and gave me so much energy - it was very special. I think that was the fourth part of the myth!” Tarragon exclaimed.

“They really were,” Ostinato agreed. “Those people performing were so brave! And you were so good at tap-dancing, Tarragon. You’re the greatest dancer. I would love to sing, but I get too nervous,” Ostinato admitted.

“Thank you, cousin. Well, sometimes dressing up can help with our confidence. Would you like to dress up?” asked Tarragon.

“I know someone who could do some make up for us, too - I wear make up to express myself” Puck chimes in.

Ostinato erupts: “That sounds like fun - let’s give it a try!”

5 pm - Finale

“I feel so free,” Ostinato announced. “I feel like I can finally sing for an audience”.

“Wonderful news, my wonderful cousin. Let’s go and find the perfect place for you to perform your song,” Tarragon encouraged. “Once you feel the fear and do it anyway, my cousin, the myth will be complete!”

“I know just the place,” Puck revealed, “follow me.”
